Credit-report dispute follow-up request

Follow up on a documented credit-report dispute, request clear results, and preserve a reliable paper trail without promising deletion.

WHEN THIS MAY HELP

Check the fit first.

  • Use after you sent a written dispute to a credit reporting company or information furnisher about specific inaccurate or incomplete credit-report information and need confirmation of receipt or investigation status.
  • Use when the written results you received do not clearly identify the disputed item, explain the outcome, or show whether the report was updated; compare the result with your original dispute and supporting records first.
  • Use after you supplied additional relevant evidence during an open dispute and want the recipient to confirm that it was associated with the correct dispute or account reference.
  • Use to request an updated report or written results after you verify the recipient's stated investigation date or deadline has passed; check the actual submission and delivery dates rather than assuming one universal timeframe.

LIMITS TO KEEP IN VIEW

What this does not do.

  • This is for FCRA-related credit-report errors or incomplete information. It is not an FDCPA debt-validation request, a cease-contact letter, or a way to cancel a debt, stop lawful notices or lawsuits, or extend any response or court deadline.
  • It does not promise removal of accurate negative information. Ask for correction or removal only where the information is inaccurate, incomplete, duplicated, belongs to someone else, or cannot be verified after an appropriate investigation.
  • Investigation timing depends on the facts and recipient. A credit reporting company generally investigates within 30 days, but CFPB notes circumstances that may allow up to 45 days; confirm your delivery date, any request for information, and the recipient's actual deadline rather than claiming a universal 30-day result.
  • Verify the current dispute address or channel with the recipient or the consumer report before sending. A recipient may require identity or report documents through its stated process; send copies, never originals, and do not assume an address is current.
  • Do not claim wrong-person information or identity theft unless true. If identity theft is suspected, use the official recovery resource at https://www.IdentityTheft.gov/; a checklist is not an affidavit, FTC report, or police report.
  • Review and tailor this educational template before use. It is not legal advice, a legally compliant contract or representation, or an auto-send instruction.

A PRACTICAL SEQUENCE

Before you use it.

  1. Review your credit report, original dispute, delivery record, and any results. Identify each disputed entry precisely and state only facts you can support.
  2. Verify the intended recipient and its current dispute address or submission channel using the consumer report, the recipient's current instructions, or a direct confirmation. Do not rely on a prefilled or assumed mailing address.
  3. Complete the letter, using a report confirmation number, dispute ID, or an account's last four digits only in {{reference}}. Do not include a full Social Security number, full account or card number, or birth date.
  4. Attach a marked copy of the relevant report and copies of supporting records, if needed. Keep the originals and make a complete copy of the signed, dated letter and everything enclosed.
  5. Use the recipient's permitted delivery method. For mail, consider certified mail with return receipt requested or another trackable method, and retain the tracking, delivery proof, and any online submission confirmation.
  6. Record the date sent, delivery or submission date, recipient, reference, materials sent, and any stated deadline. Check the written response and your updated report; verify dates and outcomes before deciding whether a further dispute, statement of dispute, or CFPB complaint is appropriate.
