Credit-Bureau Error Dispute Letter
A practical letter for asking a credit bureau to investigate specific inaccurate or incomplete report entries, with evidence and delivery records.
WHEN THIS MAY HELP
Check the fit first.
- Use when a specific entry on a report from a named credit reporting company is inaccurate or incomplete, such as a wrong balance, payment status, account status, date, or personal detail.
- Use when the report appears to contain a mixed-file or wrong-person item, but state that assertion only when it is true and identify the exact entry and report date.
- Use after reviewing a copy of the report and collecting documents that support the requested correction or removal of information that is inaccurate or cannot be verified.
- Use one tailored letter for each credit reporting company whose report contains the error; an error appearing at one bureau may not appear at another.
LIMITS TO KEEP IN VIEW
What this does not do.
- This is an educational FCRA credit-report dispute template for a credit reporting company. It is not an FDCPA debt-collection validation request, a cease-and-desist notice, or a request to stop a collector from contacting you.
- A dispute does not promise deletion: accurate, complete, and verifiable information may remain on a report. Request correction or removal only when the particular information is inaccurate, incomplete, or cannot be verified.
- Do not claim identity theft, a mixed file, or a wrong-person account unless that is true. If identity theft is involved, use the federal recovery resource at https://www.IdentityTheft.gov/ and follow its applicable steps.
- Verify the bureau's current dispute address or instructions from your credit report or the bureau before sending. Do not assume an address, and do not mail originals.
- A bureau can decline a dispute it reasonably considers frivolous or irrelevant, including one that does not identify what is wrong. Give precise, truthful facts and supporting copies.
- Investigation and follow-up timing can depend on the facts and method used. Keep dates and proof, review the written result and updated report, and verify applicable deadlines rather than expecting a universal 30-day deletion result.
- This template is not legal advice, a legally compliant contract, representation, or an automatic sending service. Review and complete it before use.
A PRACTICAL SEQUENCE
Before you use it.
- Read the report carefully. For each item, note the reporting company, report date, furnisher name, and the exact information that is wrong or incomplete; use only a last four or other non-sensitive identifier in this letter.
- Verify the intended recipient and its current dispute address or submission instructions using the address shown on your report or the credit reporting company's current official guidance. Prepare a separate dispute for each bureau that reports the error.
- Gather copies, not originals, of the marked report page and documents that support your position. If the bureau has a dispute form you choose to use, complete it accurately and include it as directed.
- Complete the letter with a clear explanation of each disputed item, why it is wrong or incomplete, and the correction or removal you are requesting. Read it for accuracy and sign it yourself if you mail a paper copy.
- Mail to the verified address using a trackable method, such as certified mail with a return receipt, when appropriate. Retain the mailing receipt, tracking number, return receipt, or other delivery proof.
- Keep a complete file: your dated letter, every enclosure, the report page, proof of delivery, online confirmation if used, and all responses. Do not send original identity or financial documents.
- Review the bureau's written result and your updated report. If the issue remains, compare the response with your evidence, consider disputing with the information furnisher, requesting a statement of dispute where available, or using an appropriate CFPB complaint process.
